The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment
Aamir Daniyal

The book Power of Now is written by Eckhart Tolle. He was born in Germany. He worked as a research scholar and supervisor at Cambridge University. The author is a contemporary spiritual teacher who is not allied with any particular religion or tradition. The first edition of this book was published in 1997. Other remarkable books by the author are Practicing the Power of Now and Stillness Speaks.

The book is divided into ten chapters. Each chapter has addressed various issues or quests that people have when they are on a spiritual journey. The author has followed question and answer format. This makes the book very simple to understand.

In the first chapter of this book, the author explains about enlightenment. According to the author, the term enlightenment is knowingly made heavy, but it is not what it is perceived. It is portrayed as some superhuman attainment by ego. It is simply ending of suffering which happens when one is connected to his/her true self. The miseries in life are the results of the external search for pleasure, validation, security and love.

In the fourth chapter, the author has shown how mind always tries to avoid them now. Living in the present moment is important. If one cannot be in the present moment during the normalcy like being in the room, walking in the forest, or listening to someone, it means there is a possibility that one cannot remain conscious in the difficult times. This is the reason one should constantly work for living in the present during ordinary situations of life. This creates an energy field, one’s aura becomes strong and negativity cannot roam around the person.

In the sixth chapter, the author has mentioned that underneath this outer form, one is connected with something very vast, immeasurable and sacred. The author has also explained how one can take the help of the body for transformation. Religions have taught to disassociate from the body. Many Sufi practised body denial through fasting and torturing body but that did not help. Transformation is through the body, it cannot be away from it.

In the ninth chapter, the author explains the difference between happiness and inner peace. Happiness is based on the conditions which are perceived as positive but inner peace is not. One cannot ascertain what is positive and what is negative. Because the total picture is not available and it takes time to get the total picture. Many people have used failure, loss, illness or pain as a stepping-stone to rise and shine. The events which one detests carries deep lessons in it. These kinds of events have the capacity to show what is real and unreal in life. Living in complete acceptance of what is, can end the drama in one’s life. One can escape unnecessary arguments with others by not identifying oneself with the mind.

In the tenth chapter, the author has explained the meaning of surrender. Surrender is most of the time understood as giving up, failing to rise to the challenges of life, becoming fatalistic and so on. But it actually means accepting the present moment without any condition and without any reservation. It is the act of renouncing inner resistance to what is. In this world, things won’t happen according to your wish. Things will go wrong and that can be very disappointing. Accepting what is, will totally free oneself from pain and sorrow of life. Surrender does not mean inaction.

In this competitive world, ambitions can be the source of misery and setbacks. That demands emotional repair for those who are suffering from such problems. Most of the people have attached their well-being and peace with external factors. External factors include other people physical possessions, name and fame and so on. This habit of chasing people has made one beggar. One has completely forgotten the inner-bliss with which one is born. The eternal quest of humanity can reach its fulfillment only when the journey towards within gets started. Intense presence can happen when one is conscious and connected to the inner self. This kind of presence can be a great healer in one’s life. This book can be a transforming journey for many. It is recommended for seekers who are in the search for answers of many unanswered questions raised within them. The things presented in the book are so profound but the plain language makes the reading smooth. The author has beautifully conveyed the timeless message of ancient spiritual masters with clarity in his own way.
